A special thread just for the Perisher v Thredbo pissing contest. Contents mostly moved from the Perisher trip report thread.

Sorry but what's the advantage of Perisher over Thredbo?

I would say in the Perisher area there's more suitable terrain available for easy progression for rank beginners and early intermediates and the lower slopes hold up better due to their altitude.

But on every other criteria Thredbo offers better and more varied skiing.

Ooh, you’re going to start WWIII here!! Thredbo has some longer (and arguably steeper) runs but it lacks the elevation of Perisher (= more reliable snow coverage). Perisher is also larger in area and has more terrain suited to beginners and intermediates. I ski at both, but have a season pass at Perisher for a reason <ducks and exits left>

Read it all bud , I actually said my knock on all 3 , Falls ,Hotham and Thredbare was their size made them become a little boring if you had a lengthy stay at any one of them. I made no mention of the terrain of any of those 3 with the exception of saying Perisher didnt match them for for having as much outright steep terrain. Although I would refute you statement of better and more varied skiing unless you count skiing on grass and rocks as part of the equation.
This is my own view as I see them after 50 odd years of skiing all of them so dont be that bloke who wants to be offended about any imagined sleight on your favourite place.

Realiability of snow coverage is the practically the same for both resorts, as their top elevation is similar. Problem with Perisher for me is the runs are too short and the off piste is a few notches below Thredbo.

I agree it's probably the better resort for families with beginners and early intermediates as it provides loads of suitable terrain for them.

I started at Perisher btw, but really haven't had much desire to return since becoming a regular at Thredbo.

So you can probably do some really good trip reports in the Thredbo thread then.

The only reliably open runs at Thredbo that are longer are High Noon and Supertrail. I'd also argue that Olympic is as steep (if not steeper) as anything at Thredbo.

I like Thredbo, but the low base elevation makes the lower half pretty average most of the time, pick the correct day though and it’s great. Other issue is the leg burn, it’s hard work to ski top to bottom without a few rest stops along the way (at least for my legs anyway).

I've skied from top of Karels to Friday Flat every single trip I've there, and not necessarily through HN or ST, so I don't know if what you mean by 'reliably'.

1/4? Where did you get this stat from?

I think the quality of the runs are better, which makes up for any deficit in number of little lines on the trail maps.

I'm not doing a trip report, just wanted to understand how Thredbo is boring compared to Perisher according to a post.

Don't take it so personally people, it's just a discussion.

I'm not religiously tied to any resort.

I mean we arent exactly comparing Verbier
    and Jackson Hole here.

    Just our little Aussie resorts.

It's the second week of July. I don't bother to ski in Australia before last week of at the earliest now.

Btw, you can ski from Eagle Nest to FF right now apparently... Doesn't that already blitz any Perisher vertical?

Skied with my niece and nephew, raise Thredbo skiers, have only been on 3 lifts at Thredbo.

    Perisher - 9 different lifts!

If you bothered to read the first comment or the follow up post that explained what you missed by not reading the first post properly then you would know. Since you cant be bothered to read either of them I dont think that leaves much of a discussion now does it ?

I guess you’ve answered your own question.
Thredbo is a really good place to ski the best two weeks of the season and a couple of selected weekends.
I gave up on Thredbo a decade ago, mainly because I like to ski In decent conditions for 4 months a year.
What a wonderful world when we get to make our own choices for our own reasons.

They did invent snowmaking though Norm and use it quite successfully on the lower half of the mountain. Forget June but in September I would think Thredbos top half is no different to Perisher.

Elevation? It's the same elevation as Perisher.

You guys are talking like Perisher is at 3000m or something. Top half of Thredbo is the entire elevation of Perisher!

As to aspect, I don't see any great advantage for Perisher in aspect either. They are both most east facing hills. Maybe gathega and blue cow have generally better aspect.

    Hahahahaha!

Perisher is awesome, its exactly like Merritts, only heaps bigger!

Its got way more lifts, that happens when you are still using ones that are 100 years old!

    Hahahaha!

Just consider I've done about 250 days at Thredbo... Jesus.. I had my honeymoon there.
But to offer it represents a better season length product for skiing is firmly having one's head up ones Arse.
I've always said. The season is 16 weeks.
On average thredbo is better or more desirable for four of those weeks.

Thredbo has 32 hectares above 1690m
    Perisher has 1168.

That is the Supertrail. Like I said reliably longer, Dream Run and Schuss are normally closed so that only leaves Highnoon. Antons and Sponars are shorter than most things in Guthega, let alone all of Mt Perisher. Funnelweb is open less than Olympic. Basin runs are all shorter than Frony Valley.

So Thredbo has reliably open 2 runs longer than Perisher (however the bottom third of both those can be horrendous elephant snot most of the season) and nothing steeper than Olympic. Most of Thredbo's runs are the same length or shorter than most of Perisher.

Ah the classic Thredbo vs Perisher debate. I stay in Thredbo, I eat in Thredbo, I ski mostly at Perisher.

They both have their benefits and downsides, but I love them both. On a good day, blue sky and powder, Perisher has nothing on Thredbo. In marginal conditions or a wind hold day, I wouldn't want to be anywhere but Perisher. In Australia, there are more marginal and wind hold days than epic ones.

Eyre and International vs Antons and Sponars? Ooooh I honestly cant pick. Front and Centre Valley vs Friday Flat and Merrits? Thredbo please! Supertrail and High Noon vs Excellerator and Rollercoaster? A day at Blue Cow wins. It's horses for courses and all very subjective.

Now if Perisher had a proper village...:out:

One thing I have never found at Perisher, but assume must exist, is that classic windblown area. But I have never done a season there, so I assume its just lack of familiarity. I have loved skiing there every time I do, and have been skiing with regulars there which IMO makes it better, as they know the flow. I certainly don't think either is better overall, they are different, viva la difference I say.

Well yes, if your calculations lead you to believe that the three beginner turns Front Valley provides is longer than any run you can have in the Basin area of Thredbo, then I guess there isn't anything more to discuss.
