Just discovered I can go to NZ and ski at Treble Cone for a week for the same cost as a week at Thredbo, but only if I stay in bargain basement accommodation. There are a few Youth Hostels in Wanaka for around the $30-a-night mark. Anybody got any experience of what they're like? Would they be ok for an old geezer like me or would I be in a bunk room with a dozen drunk 20 year olds?

There will be other tight-arse old blokes there. Stayed in YHA backpackers a few years ago. Would stay there again if I was going back to Wanaka.

Not disputing that NZ can be had for similar cost as Thredbo for a week, but what sort of budget are you looking at for the all-in trip cost? Are you talking 7d or 9 (e.g. fly Fri, ski the weekends either side of the following work week, return Sun night)?

I researched doing the same sought of thing a few years ago, but this old geezer doesn't want to be sharing with 20 something year olds anymore ! came up with this place, plenty of good reviews and only $66 for your own room.

Try the Altamont , Top 10 Holiday park or Yha for a cheap private room.

Ahh Perth... You have to fly to ski anywhere..

I usually budget $2k and end up spending $3k ex-MEL when going to NZ. Not solo though - accom would have ranged from $40-80 pp pn and stuff like car and fuel is shared. You're in the ball park (hate to think what flights must be costing)

I was a old purple cow fan.
It looked more upmarket last time I drove past.
    Yha now.
