The games are on! Apex race rats are excited about the prospects for our local lads. Ryan Moffat placed 21st in mens Super G yesterday in a race that had a top 20 with athletes from 17 nations. Who says ski racing is dominated by the traditional alpine nations?

Now we're waiting for mens ski cross. Apex's own Reece Howden has the best points going in and should podium, but it only takes one mishap and you're gone. If the games had had a DH (and why don't they? There's a perfectly good olympic track there), Reece might have been in the medals there too. He won the last two races on the western Canada circuit just before leaving for Norway. We've been seeing lots of pics from a pair of proud mums on Facebook. Go Reece!

She had a great start but it was a nicely executed move by the Swiss girl to go inside and take gold.

Apex is just buzzing over Reece's gold. The racing crowd haven't had much to cheer about since Kelsey Serwa won silver in Sochi, so the freestyle faction have been giving us lots of lip service. In some ways, this win has generated more excitement than locally bred athletes winning at the very top levels, because those guys have long since moved on to national teams and overseas competition and are rarely seen at the old home mountain until they retire. Reece trains here most of the time unless he's away at a race, his parents and brother ski here and they all work on volunteer projects with the rest of us. Hardworking family, personable humble kids. Hopefully he goes even further than this. He'll have to decide which path to follow soon, alpine or cross. It won't be easy, he won back to back provincial DH races a week before he left for Norway.

I like his spirit! The Canadian led out of the start but Louis was not settling for silver. He made a do-or-die passing move for the gold. It didn't work but he gave it a red hot go and still managed to recover and get bronze. What is his best event?
